Low testosterone level (hypogonadism)

Testosterone, is a primarily male hormone, although small amounts of testosterone could be found in women body. The main producers of this hormones are testicles among men and ovaries among women. The production of this hormone usually starts in puberty.

Blood test levels – This test will reveal if your testosterone level is in the normal range. This normal range can vary but it is usually 300ng/dl-1100ng/dl. The secretion of this hormone is dependent on time. It is highest in the morning and that is the time when blood tests are done.

Physical Exam and medical history:

Physical signs and medical history can help the doctor to figure out the cause of your problem. He will surely search for characteristic symptoms listed above, plus he can test your peripheral vision that can indicate a pituitary tumor. The further doctor will do MRI or CT scan of your brain. Medical history of both you and your family is very important. This disorder is probably gen-related so if somebody in your family has this disorder it is possible that you also have it.

When the doctor did accurate diagnostics, he can start the right treatment for the patient.

Causes of low testosterone:

  • Age (getting older reduces your testosterone levels)
  • Cancer treatment
  • The chronic disease mostly associated with kidneys and liver
  • Excessive drinking
  • AIDS
  • Injury of testicles
  • Pituitary gland problem- pituitary gland releases a signal hormone to testicles to produce testosterone

Treatment of low testosterone

  • Changing lifestyle ( cardiovascular exercises and lifting weight contribute the most)
  • Testosterone boosters – some herbal supplements
  • Testosterone food
  • Testosterone replacement therapy – there are 3 ways of using this therapy: deep muscle injections, gels, and buccal tablet. The most important thing is that you can not use this therapy on your own hand. Always advise the doctor. This therapy is contraindicated for people who have breast or prostate cancer. This if you use this therapy, you will need to check your blood, because if your testosterone level is above normal you can experience a higher level of red blood cells, acne, and breast enlargement. Moreover, other side effects are skin reaction, limiting sperm production.
